SPORT

THRILLER IN MANILA

Though the fight was held in Quezon City, just outside the Philippine capital, no one can question the buzz surrounding this legendary bout, held on 1 October 1975. In one corner of that tropical ring stood Muhammad Ali, anti-war civil rights activist and fight promoter, as well as the star attraction. In the other glowered Joe Frazier, two years younger than Ali, and an equally feted fighter.

Yet in the run up to the event – held abroad after Ali was stripped of his champion title for refusing to serve in the Vietnam War – Ali characterised Frazier as a bumbling gorilla to be showboated, rather than fought seriously. When the two fighters come to blows, it’s clear that Frazier remained a worthy match. Going to the 14th round, the match is still regarded as one of the most exciting ever fought.

THE RED BULL AIR RACE

Our pilots are good, but you’re unlikely to experience anything seen on this channel while onboard. The energy drink-sponsored aerobatic event is a thrilling pursuit competition, which sets the globe’s most gifted aviators up against each other in a race based on swiftness, accuracy and agility. This time around, the Red Bull Air Race features a challenging new aviation obstacle event, dubbed ‘air racing’, wherein the pilots must complete a dizzying aerial course. The fastest craft wins! Entrants are judged individually, against the clock. They must manoeuvre along a tight, slalom course, slipping between sets of specially designed pylons, known as ‘air gates’ and executing a series of tight turns. Flick over to see more.

KIDS

FAIRLY ODD PARENTS

Faced with dull video games and even duller parents, what’s a 10-year-old to do? If you’re Timmy Turner, all you gotta do is turn to your magical, totally messed-up Fairy Godparents for help. But when the fairies involved are as wacky as Cosmo and Wanda, you might get more of their ‘help’ than you bargained for!

CAMP LAZLO

Camp Lazlo chronicles the odd and happy camping life of a Bean Scout named Lazlo and his two bunk mates, Raj and Clam.

THE BATMAN

The classic superhero cartoon draws on Batman’s early years, as he starts out as protector, defender and Caped Crusader. Batman – who’s in his mid-20s – balances crimefighting with his public persona as billionaire bachelor Bruce Wayne.

MY GYM PARTNER’S A MONKEY

Thanks to a mix-up at the Central School District’s Admissions Office, Adam Lyon is transferred to the all-animal Charles Darwin Middle School, where all the zoo animals send their kids. Can Adam get through it alive?

SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS

Beneath the Pacific Ocean in the subterranean city of Bikini Bottom lives a square yellow sea sponge named SpongeBob SquarePants. He lives in a Pineapple with his pet snail. Dive in and soak it all up with SpongeBob!

FAMILY

DOCTOR WHO

Classic British family viewing, refreshed for the 21st century. Doctor Who (David Tennant) travels through space and time, defeating evil and generally saving the day. In this thrilling episode, Earth assembles a collection of heavyweight heroes to take on the might of the new Dalek Empire, while the Doctor and companion Donna (Catherine Tate) face a bleak battle with an old enemy.

DOCTOR WHO CONFIDENTIAL

Behind-the-scenes secrets from the show.

ROBIN HOOD

The BBC’s action-packed new version of the legendary hero. In this episode, the Sheriff has turned Locksley into a garrison town, throwing its people out to make room for an army of vicious mercenaries. As Robin makes a plan to stop them, he receives a vital message from King Richard, which means he must leave the town – and Marian – in danger.

CREATURE COMFORTS

This popular series from Aardman Animation – the hit team who brought you characters like Wallace and Gromit – is about animals who talk to the camera. The creatures interviewed here discuss their views on the world and various aspects of their everyday lives. The series is based on interviews sourced from real people, and has an authentic feel that makes it unique. Charming, hilarious and very British, it’s perfect TV viewing for the entire family.

ALTERNATIVE COMEDY

THE MIGHTY BOOSH*

This episode, entitled Party, sees Vince Noir throw a house party for his grumpy mate Howard Moon’s birthday. Yet the attention soon falls on the ever-vain Vince, leaving Howard even more sullen than usual, in another classic instalment from this muchloved British comedy series.

THE FLIGHT OF THE CONCHORDS*

The NYC-based Kiwi singer-songwriting duo hit a rift when Bret flees as Jemaine is mugged. In order to win back his friend’s trust, Bret must retrieve his partner’s beloved camera phone.

PULLING*

NEW COMEDY

30 ROCK*

This cult US sitcom is set behind the scenes of a TV sketch show, and based on the experiences of Tina Fey – best known for her impersonation of Sarah Palin – while head writer on America’s flagship comedy programme, Saturday Night Live.

GAVIN AND STACEY*

The much-loved and rightly praised Gavin and Stacey tells the story of a young couple from different sides of Britain, who meet over the internet and hit it off. Yet most of the laughs are delivered by their larger-than-life family and friends.

HARRY AND PAUL*

After eight years, stalwart British TV comedians Harry Enfield and Paul Whitehouse (above) are back on our screens with a hilarious new sketch series, replete with dozens of great characters, running jokes and catchphrases.

THE OFFICE (US)*

Slough’s Wernham Hogg paper company is reincarnated in Pennsylvania, under the monicker of Dunder Mifflin, in this American version of Ricky Gervais’s embarrassingly realistic British sitcom. Indeed, perhaps the last laugh lies in the US, as this show has now been running longer than the original. Emmynominee Steve Carell plays the boss from hell.

* Programmes on this channel may contain strong language and content unsuitable for children.

CLASSIC COMEDY

MEN BEHAVING BADLY

Classic Brit-com about two permanently immature flatmates and their relationships with the girls upstairs. Dorothy and Tony are avoiding Gary after cowardly stepping out of
an aggressive driving dispute. Hence Gary hires a ‘large man’ to prove his manhood. But as always, things do not go to plan.

ONLY FOOLS AND HORSES
One of the best-loved British sitcoms of all time, with south London wheeler-dealer Del Boy – the peerless David Jason – and hapless brother Rodney – Nicholas Lyndhurst.

In this episode Del’s latest moneyspinner (he hopes) are 1,000 musical doorbells which play the National Anthem. Unfortunately ‘Long Live Swaziland’ is not likely to go down too
well in Peckham – even with Rodney to help shift them in the market (the plonker has lost his job). Raquel, meanwhile, is rehearsing for Shakespeare’s As You Like It. But when she tells
Del she has something to tell him, it is not the result of her audition.

FRENCH AND SAUNDERS GO TO THE MOVIES
You’ll never be able to watch any of these movies again with a straight face. This is a compilation of Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders’s cinematic spoofs from their 1990s BBC hit show.

Highlights include Hannibal Lecter and the Chianti scene from Silence of the Lambs, projectile vomiting from The Exorcist, Aliens and Mother Superior’s rendition of Climb Every
Mountain in The Sound of Music.

VARIETY

HAIRY BAKERS

Pies and pasties take Dave and Si (above) on a long trip from Cornwall to Scotland. Starting in the far south-west, they bake traditional pasties. Later, they head north to the Midlands and visit an orchard in Abberley, Worcestershire, to produce a succulent, deep-filled apple pie. From there, it’s on to Melton Mowbray where they try their hand at making hand-raised pork pies at Ye Olde Pork Pie Shoppe. Their journey ends on the banks of the River Deveron, where the Hairies cook a salmon coulibiac (a whole fish stuffed with prawns wrapped in filo pastry and baked en croute) and feed it to an assembled company of pipers, Highland dancers and the odd fiddler.

TRUE STORIES: JAMES BOND

This documentary examines the inspirations for and creation of the world’s best-loved secret agent. On 17 February 1952, Ian Fleming sat down at his typewriter in Jamaica to write, as he puts it: “The spy story to end all spy stories.” Yet, as this documentary reveals, some of Bond’s details made their way into Fleming’s books quite by chance. For instance, a concerned reader suggested Bond trade in his Bentley for an Aston Martin; the author agreed that this latter vehicle was slightly cooler.

TOP GEAR

Jeremy Clarkson and his petrolheads take a road trip from San Francisco to Utah in three new-generation muscle cars. Back in the UK, the Fiat 500 Abarth gets a test drive and Will Young is the Star in a Reasonably Priced Car.

WORLD

PAUL MERTON IN INDIA*

Comedian Paul Merton – quick-witted star of the BBC’s current affairs quiz Have I Got News For You? – presents his own unique perspective on a land of startling contradictions in this fresh and engaging glimpse of a vast and diverse country. Rarely have country and presenter been so perfectly matched. Merton’s surreal and intense personal odyssey takes him from the crowded city streets of Mumbai to the harsh beauty of rural India; from the rugged terrain of the north to the sultry heat of the south. Wandering off the typical tourist trails, Merton readily follows his own instincts to expose an unfamiliar side of the global economic powerhouse, maintaining a delicate balance of heart and humour throughout.

LOUIS THEROUX: KILLADELPHIA*

The genial presenter signs up for his most dangerous assignment yet – patrolling the crime-ridden streets of Philadelphia with the local law enforcement. He visits an area that has over 400 homicides a year, drug dealers on every corner and where carrying a gun is part of everyday life. But during his time spent with the local cops, he sees a complex picture evolve: yes, there are good guys, bad guys, guns and violence but there is also tenderness and compassion found in the most unexpected of places.

Theroux is known for his investigative series for BBC2. His unique faux-naive style separates him from his colleagues. His major television series include When Louis Met…

ENTERTAINMENT

CSI: CRIME SCENE INVESTIGATION*

The gripping Las Vegas-based crime drama. Once he unseals a package sent to him through the mail, investigator Grissom is floored when he finds a miniature crime scene inside. Grissom vows to examine the miniature and discover the actual location, when the investigation makes it clear the murder showed has yet to happen.

SUNSHINE*

Steve Coogan plays Bob ‘Bing’ Crosby, a dustman who’s addicted to gambling, in this bittersweet comedy drama from one of the writers behind The Royle Family. In this episode, Bing takes his first tentative steps to attempt to overcome his gambling addiction. But his endeavours to woo his girlfriend back fall on deaf ears and, in the absence of a possible reconciliation with her, he starts to question whether his attempts at recovery are worthwhile. In the end, encouraged by his dad, Bing’s recovery continues to grow from strength to strength.

FAMILY GUY*

Anarchic US animated sitcom, like a cruder – and sometimes even funnier – Simpsons. It’s been cancelled by the TV network a couple of times, but the fans keep getting it brought back. In this episode, Fast Times At Buddy Cianci Jr High, teenager Chris is hot for his buxom blonde teacher, until she asks him to murder her husband – gangsta style!

* Programmes on this channel may contain strong language and content unsuitable for children.
