Conference venues in Copenhagen and Birmingham

Sound and vision
WITH COPENHAGEN’S NOMA now officially the fanciest global eatery according to the recent S.Pellegrino World’s 50 Best Restaurants, it seems a shame to have a meeting in this city in just an average hotel. So how about a classical concert hall instead?
Mogens Dahl in the Islands Brygge area of Copenhagen is a private venue that was converted in 2006 from an early 20th-century stable. Scandinavian minimalism rules of course, with the odd reminder of the building’s past. The main concert hall holds 210 people, and the acoustics are so good you probably won’t need a microphone. A smaller hall next door provides a break-out space, while a former garage offers space for 240 and opens out on to a pretty cobbled courtyard for summer drinks.
Food is better than average. The in-house chef uses local ingredients – including Jutlandic beer – and can offer an organic menu. Alternatively, you can call in the grub from nearby Michelin-starred restaurant Formel B, for a thoroughly sophisticated soirée.

Put on a show
LIKE MOST SPORTS STADIA, Edgbaston has its own conference facilities. But for something a little different but still close enough to treat your clients to a bit of international cricket (Pakistan play Australia there this month), try the Mac arts centre across the road.
Reopened in May after a £15m renovation, this light-filled space, set on the edge of a park, is almost unrecognisable from the maze of concrete corridors that had survived since the 1960s. With a couple of theatres, a cinema, exhibition galleries and a café, Mac is packed morning until night. All of the spaces can be hired – the largest theatre sits up to 220 – and there are seven dedicated function rooms. The added bonus is Mac’s super-powerful new IT system, which allows sound and vision to be transmitted from anywhere in the centre to anywhere else.
