Rare excellence
How London’s Dorchester is staying at the top
WORDS | ROBINA DAM

THE PEOPLE BEHIND LONDON’S DORCHESTER HOTEL ARE PREPARING TO LAUNCH A NEW PROPERTY THIS SUMMER. Unlike its big sister, Coworth Park is set in semi-rural tranquillity on the edge of London. With its location bordering Windsor Great Park (only 20 minutes from Heathrow and 40 minutes from central London) Coworth Park plans to start hosting polo events in April even though the hotel won’t open till late summer.
But the new venue is unlikely to outshine the grande dame herself, given the original Dorchester’s recent tweaks. For a start the fabulous new spa has made this a destination in itself. Then there is the continued success of the Dorchester’s individual restaurants which include China Tang for glamour and The Promenade for power breakfasts and the ultimate in afternoon teas (without the ludicrous waiting lists of The Ritz).
Meanwhile, the Grill Room (pictured above right) holds its own as the capital’s power-broking centre for lunch – all very alpha male amidst the Scottish highland décor. As the name suggests it makes sense to try the grill of the day (usually for two) which comes with all the trimmings. Meat errs on the side of rare, but what’s even rarer is the lack of sniffiness if you ask for it not only medium, but, heck, even well-done.
The enthusiasm of the sommelier is infectious, hence if the tasting menu with wine pairing is slightly above budget for a Valentine’s special (at £72.50 per person for five courses) then you can still go with his recommendations by the glass for the à la carte.
Although it’s been attracting celebrities since the 1930s and shouts sumptuous extravagance to the rafters in its 250 rooms and suites (rooms from £295; suites from £925 plus VAT) it’s worth checking their special offers this month whether you’re feeling romantic or not. They’re willing to spread the love.
