Step up

HE WAS ONE OF THE HIGHEST PAID FASHION PHOTOGRAPHERS OF HIS TIME; she, the leading supermodel. So why have so few of us heard of Fernand and Lisa Fonssagrives? The photographer met his muse, model and wife in France, when they were both dancers. It was only after sustaining a diving injury that Fernand turned to photography, taking striking nude studies that draw on the Surrealist movement. On relocating to New York during World War II, the duo introduced a highbrow, European sensibility to the ladies’ glossies. But Fernand was ambivalent about his success, preferring to remain anonymous, and eventually, forgotten – until this show at London’s Michael Hoppen gallery, which thrusts his work back into the light. www.michaelhoppengallery.com
