Pleasing the cognacscenti

Courvoisier releases an ultra-exclusive cognac

YOU CAN’T BITE THE HAND THAT FEEDS, but there must have come a point when the luxury cognac house Courvoisier realised that it suddenly appeared to be more associated with hip hop stars rather than banking moguls. The solution? Launch a hyper-premium product that will separate the cognac-wannabes from the connoisseurs. So they recently unveiled L’Essence de Courvoisier, their most high-end bottle to date. It’s matched with a high-end price tag of £1,800.

“I have worked with Courvoisier for three decades but this creation with the best quality eaux de vie takes it to a different level,” the master blender Jean-Marc Olivier told me during his recent visit to the UK. The blend took four years to create.

“For a historic brand like Courvoisier, which goes back to the pre-Napoleonic era, we wanted to design a memorable bottle with a similar heritage and prestige as us.”

Hence the French crystal house Baccarat was commissioned to create the jewelled stopper and flacon, designed like a teardrop encased in gold. To evoke tears of joy, surely? Robina Dam
