Alice Instone interviews a Shoe

Celebrity shoes form the latest exhibition from artist Alice Instone

newbianca-jagger

Young British artist – though not officially of the YBAs crowd – Alice Instone launched her latest exhibition Interview with a Shoe last week where guests were invited to wear their most flamboyant footwear.

The subject may be close to my heart (and feet, given that I used to edit a now defunct magazine called Shoo) but Alice’s paintings of the shoes clearly hit a chord. While she painted the shoes, their celebrity owners told tales on them; given that they included Bianca Jagger, Laura Bailey and Elle McPherson, there were some fabulous stories.

Bianca chose a pair of Manolo Blahnik evening mules: “I’ve worn them on so many memorable occasions. I especially remember one evening with Yves Saint Laurent where he decorated my ball gown with ferns before the party.”

Lest you think they’re all frivolous – no less than Cherie Blair and Liberty’s Shami Chakrabarti brought the ‘high’ to heels.

You can catch the exhibition at Beach Blanket Babylon in Bethnal Green Road till 3rd June.
