A nimble touch

It’s a boast that many hotels lay claim to but few can actually pull off: rooms that feel like a home from home. The 13 individually designed suites at Nimb, a newly opened hotel in Copenhagen’s Tivoli Gardens, may just about qualify… Though only if your home has been exquisitely decorated with a limitless budget.

Each suite bears the stamp of proprietor Jacob Grønlykke’s impeccable taste, with bracingly modern touches (Bang & Olufsen flat screens) sitting comfortably alongside antiques and richly embroidered counterpanes. Our suite was surprisingly compact given the prices (from €532), but the relative size of rooms seems a minor quibble when you’re surrounded by such beauty. The same meticulous care with which Grønlykke has stocked his chain of Løgismose delicatessens has been applied here. Sheets are Egyptian cotton, and every piece of furniture has been handpicked. There’s so much attention to detail that even the milk served at breakfast is organic and comes from the hotel’s very own on-site dairy.

The hotel bar, formerly a ballroom, also deserves a mention – the owners have played up the room’s grand proportions by leaving it sparsely furnished, creating a really unique space. Finally, Thomas Herman’s eponymous restaurant downstairs has received rave reviews from just about every critic in town. Tabitha Lasley

[ JEDDAH ]

King of the sea

The name Qasr Al Sharq means ‘Palace of the Orient’ and this luxury hotel looking over the Red Sea at Jeddah does its best to live up to it. The interiors are encrusted in marble from around the world and adorned with specially designed Arabesque patterns.

The rooms are the largest in the region – the two master suites sprawl over 1,000 square metres with bedrooms, an office, a sitting room and a private spa. The seven boardrooms are themed after the world’s economic centres, from the British Windsor room to the Japanese Kyoto room.

But what you really need to feel like a king is to have your slightest whim catered for day or night, and this is where the Qasr Al Sharq, part of the Waldorf-Astoria collection, prides itself. There are five members of staff per guest and you even get a highly trained personal butler. Very good, Jeeves. Lee Cheshire
