PROFILE | CATE BLANCHETT

The stunning Australian actress stars in our movie The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
- Cate Blanchett, 39, is the first, and probably only, actress to portray English Queen Elizabeth I, film star Katharine Hepburn, and (male) singer-songwriter Bob Dylan.
- Melbourne-born Blanchett was hotly tipped from the beginning of her career. After leaving the National Institute of Dramatic Art in Sydney, Blanchett was acclaimed for her role opposite fellow Aussie star Geoffrey Rush in David Mamet’s Oleanna.
- Blanchett came to widespread attention in the title role of 1998’s Elizabeth. She played another capricious queen in The Lord of the Rings§ trilogy – this time the elf Galadriel. She was one of six actors to portray Bob Dylan in I’m Not There, including Heath Ledger, Richard Gere and an unknown 13-year-old African-American. When she heard of the idea, “I think I stopped breathing. I said, ‘That’s wild.’”
- Her role as the love interest for the backwards-aging Benjamin Button is Blanchett’s second time on-screen with Brad Pitt, after 2006’s Babel.
- It was far from love at first sight when Blanchett met her playwright husband Andrew Upton, while performing in a production of The Seagull. “He thought I was aloof and I thought he was arrogant. It just shows you how wrong you can be, but once he kissed me that was that.” They married in 1997 and have three children.
- After living in Brighton, on the south coast of England, for several years, the couple moved back to Sydney. They run a film production company together, Dirty Films, and are artistic directors of the Sydney Theatre Company.
- A favourite with the Academy, seven of Blanchett’s films have been nominated for Best Picture. She won Best Supporting Actress for her role as Katharine Hepburn in The Aviator.
