PROFILE | JOHN MALKOVICH

Oscar-nominee pleases the carrot cake art house lovers and popcorn masses in Burn After Reading.

  • Osbourne Cox, the violent, Wasp-ish character Malkovich plays in our onboard feature film, Burn After Reading, may not
have been so unfamiliar to the Oscarnominated actor. John Malkovich grew up in a parochial town in Illinois. A long-time
family friend described Malkovich’s environmentalist father as “a cross between a Kennedy and [outdoorsman]
Euell Gibbons”, and Malkovich’s brother “beat me up nearly every day, without fail”, according to the actor’s testimony.
So much for being In The Line of Fire.
  • Though he appears to be gaunt and big boned onscreen, Malkovich was quite fat as an adolescent. He shook off the
pounds by eating nothing but jelly for a few months.
  • Malkovich was drawn to a career in Conservation, and only tried acting while studying at Eastern Illinois
    University.
  • Despite his artsy pedigree, Malkovich admits that he took one of his most famous roles, as Cyrus ‘The Virus’ Grissom in the
Jerry Bruckheimer produced blockbuster Con Air, simply for the money.
  • Following Con Air’s success, Malkovich took a number of villainous roles, such as Constantine in last year’s Mutant
Chronicles, and Pascal Sauvage in Johnny English (2003).
  • Acting aside, Malkovich takes a serious interest in clothing. He’s modelled for Japanese clothing label, Commes des
Garçons, and, in 1999 he directed a short film for British fashion designer, Bella Freud, to showcase her latest collection.
  • He also founded his own design company in 2002, called Mrs Mudd. The company produces a clothing line, dubbed
    Uncle Kimono.
  • Malkovich even tried to get hip-hop super-producer, Dr. Dre into his clothing. ‘’I really wanted Dr. Dre to wear one
of my suits, but I don’t know him, and he never responded,” he told the NY Times, “I love the doctor, so that was
    disappointing.’’
