Meet Manilow
He’s never been cool and he’s never cared; while some of us have been making fun of him, Barry Manilow has sold 75 million albums. This month he’ll perform nine nights of Ultimate Manilow: The Hits at the Las Vegas Hilton. Favourites like Could It Be Magic and Mandy are sure to feature;

The Cairo International Film Festival has been showcasing excellent new films for the last 30 years. It was ranked second, behind London, in the world’s most important non-competitive film festivals. Party with the locals
The end of November is when Barbados celebrates gaining independence from Britain in 1966. Yet there’s no reason for Brits not to join in the annual celebrations. Festivities begin with a parade through Bridgetown (which every single islander seems to get involved with) and is followed by the lighting of the parliament building in the national colours of blue and gold; www.barbados.org/indepen.htm

Drink up
Whiskyship is Zurich’s tribute to the ‘w’ drink, with more than 850 single malts on offer. Head to the Bürkliplatz dock, where ships have been loaded with the goods,
awaiting your visit. True hedonists can also enjoy a few of the 300 different different brands of cigars here, though there are healthier options, like a taste of Loch Fyne smoked salmon; www.whiskyship.com
Birmingham’s big tickets

Now’s the time to book tickets for next month’s Clothes Show Live (5-10 December) at Birmingham’s NEC arena. The annual fashion fest has gone from strength to strength, long after the TV show with which it shared its name dropped off the airwaves. The catwalks will host labels from Alexander McQueen and John Galliano to high street stores. And there’s plenty of shopping opportunities. Before that, the NEC will host the BBC Good Food Show (26-30 November), fresh from a run at London Olympia (14-16 November) and SECC Glasgow (31 October-2 November). Experts including Nigella Lawson (right), James Martin and Jamie Oliver will be there to show you how to cook flavours of the moment. For the petrol heads who aren’t excited by the Good Food Show, from 28 November the venue becomes home to Unleashed, a celebration of motorbikes, scooters and all their accompanying paraphernalia, and stunt riders will be performing at the ‘Thunderdrome’; www.necgroup.co.uk
