JDH salon
Green credentials are becoming an
almost obligatory selling point for
new businesses, but James Dun’s
House, a new hair and beauty salon
in Glasgow, is going even further.
It has not only coiffeurs, as you’d
expect, but also an ‘eco team leader’
(yes, really) to oversee all aspects
of the business’s environmental and
recycling practices, such as water
use, energy use and air quality. The
salon, which has a sister branch
in Aberdeen, stocks organic Aveda
products that are manufactured
with use of sustainable wind energy.
Looks like it’s time for you to save
the planet by dropping in for that
pixie crop.

OLD FAVOURITE IN ALEPPO, SYRIA

Desert ‘beehive’ houses
The exact origins of the ancient cone-shaped houses are uncertain, but various
incarnations of this desert-living architecture are estimated to have existed in
Syria perhaps as far back as 10,000 years ago. The beehive houses are no
longer in common use as living quarters here, but some families do live in
them. The conical shape remains an excellent basic design for a well-insulated
space, keeping the heat out during the day and the cold air out at night. You
can see beehive houses in the deserts near Aleppo. It’s best to drive there with
a person with local knowledge. The book Bradt Travel Guide Syria (£9.99) is also
a useful resource.
