Profile | George Clooney
The actor they call ‘Gorgeous George’ is a 1920s’ football coach in rom-com Leatherheads
- George Clooney was born in Lexington,
Kentucky on 6 May 1961. His father Nick Clooney
was a well-known broadcast news journalist
and his aunt Rosemary Clooney was an
actress and singer who performed with
stars including Bing Crosby. - Of Renée Zellweger’s performance in
Leatherheads, the film about 1920s’
football of which he is the
writer, director and male star,
Clooney says: “I realised
that I didn’t even have to
brief Renée; she just gets
it. Most actors feel as
though they’re from
2008 and stick out like a
sore thumb, but Renée’s
timeless. She’s a perfect
romantic lead.” - Clooney’s big break
as an actor was starring
as Dr Doug Ross in the
television series ER. His
success at playing the
doctor – whom women
worldwide dreamt would give them a physical
– helped to land him better quality movie roles
following previous forays into film acting that
he says are best forgotten. One of the more
dubious movies in which he starred is
Return Of The Killer Tomatoes (1988). - Famously a long-term bachelor,
Clooney brought a girlfriend to the Academy
Awards ceremony for the first time
this year, his then partner Sarah
Larson. The pair had both been
injured in a motorcycle crash,
though not seriously. - Clooney is often active in
humanitarian campaigning.
This year the United Nations
awarded him a Messenger
of Peace title because of
his efforts to draw media
attention to social causes.
