From this month The Scottish National Portrait Gallery
in Edinburgh becomes the newest venue for Vanity Fair
Portraits, fresh from a sell-out run at its sister gallery in
London. The exhibition brings together some 150 images
from the American magazine, ranging from its original
1913-36 incarnation (think Charlie Chaplin, Jean Harlow
and even Albert Einstein) to the magazine reborn for the
‘new Hollywood years’ from 1983 to the present day. This
shot of Geena Davis reclining on a car was taken for Vanity
Fair soon after she starred as housewife Thelma Dickinson
in the road movie Thelma & Louise. Look out also for
Annie Leibovitz’s April 2001 group photo of actresses
including Nicole Kidman, Gwyneth Paltrow, Penélope
Cruz, Sophia Loren and Catherine Deneuve.
