NEW OPENING IN… ZURICH, SWITZERLAND

The Dolder Grand

This month sees the relaunch of the iconic castle hotel, The Dolder Grand, perched on
a hill overlooking Zurich. When it first opened in 1899, the telephone was considered
a cutting-edge facility. Now, its 2008 upgrade, which took acclaimed architectural firm
Norman Foster & Partners four years to finish and cost more than £200 million, means
the luxury retreat contains a vast spa, two restaurants and 173 sumptuous guest rooms.
The suites are inspired by famous figures, from the Rolling Stones to Swiss artist Alberto
Giacometti, and are the work of supremely hip interiors specialists United Designers.

OLD FAVOURITE IN… NORTH YORKSHIRE, ENGLAND

The White Horse

The White Horse at Kilburn, near Leeds, has been part of
the North Yorkshire landscape for more than 150 years.
Covering about an acre and a half of land, it’s claimed that
the white chalk horse was cut into the limestone rock of
Roulston Scar in 1857 by schoolteacher John Hodgson,
with help from a small army of volunteers. A recent
coating of whitewash has helped keep it gleaming.
