Rustle up a room

WHEN IS A HOTEL not a hotel? When it’s apparently called a “restaurant
with rooms”, as is the case with Russell’s in the heart of the Cotswolds
(a 90-minute drive from East Midlands). Sure, the restaurant is worth a
visit for its own sake – self-assured cooking, excellent local produce and
generous portions would make it more than hold its own among well-known
London eateries, as the monkfish with carrot risotto, and chorizo and red
pepper confit proved. The rooms (from £120 for doubles per night including
breakfast) make it just as much a destination, though calling their openbeam
suite (from £245 per night including breakfast) a “room” is a trifle
unfair, given that it’s larger than most city studio flats. That, and its generous
open bathroom which could easily hold 20 people (should you feel so
inclined), as well as its rustic charm make it a perfect romantic hideaway.

The Westerwood Hotel and Spa, near Glasgow, has added
a conference suite for up to 500 people, with LCD screens
and ISDN high-speed data links, because the countryside
location has been attracting business guests. “Dramatic
views of the Campsie Hills are a good incentive for
international delegates,” says manager Nick Oldham.
