PROFILE:  CLIVE OWEN

width="150" height="244">
On hearing Hollywood’s premier screen siren
Angelina Jolie describe him as “sexy”, actor
Clive Owen says that he “fell over laughing”.

Maybe he shouldn’t laugh so hard, however
– in 2007 he was named one of the “Sexiest
Men Alive” by People magazine.

While playing Romeo in 1988, Owen
fell for his Juliet, actress Sarah-Jane
Fenton. They wed in 1995 and remain
happily married. The couple have two
daughters, Hannah and Eve.

It was after starring as the Artful Dodger in a school production of
Oliver that Owen was bitten by the acting bug. He says his
teachers were less than encouraging.

A David Bowie fanatic, Owen claims that as a youngster
he used to dye his hair to match Bowie’s latest incarnation.

Previously in the top stream at school, when Owen joined Coventry’s Belgrade
Youth Theatre at 13, his schoolwork started to suffer. Out of the nine O-levels he sat,
he passed just one – English.

Before being accepted to study at prestigious London drama school
RADA in 1984, Owen had spent the previous two years living on unemployment benefit.

In the original West End theatre production of Closer, Owen played
Dan – Jude Law’s character in the critically-acclaimed movie that followed. Owen’s
performance in the fi lm, as the more sinister character of Larry, became one of his best-known.

Owen’s 1998 fi lm Croupier failed to hold the attention of British audiences but was
a box-offi ce hit in the USA.
