PROFILE Robert De Niro

Living legend Robert De Niro steals the show as a pirate in the fantasy epic Stardust

  • Robert De Niro was born in New York in
1943. When growing up, he was so small and
shy that he was nicknamed Bobby Milk.

  • He made his official acting debut in Brian
De Palma’s Greetings (1968) but didn’t gain wider recognition until he played Johnny Boy in Martin
    Scorsese’s Mean Streets (1973).

  • He worked with Scorsese on a further seven films – in Taxi Driver (1976), New
York, New York (1977), Raging Bull (1980), The King of Comedy (1983),
Goodfellas (1990), Cape Fear (1991), and Casino (1995).

  • His iconic performance in Taxi Driver as Travis Bickle clinched his status as
one the finest actors of his generation and he became renowned for his improvised monologue, including the
famous line, “You talkin’ to me?” in the film.

  • De Niro won an Oscar for Best Supporting
Actor for his portrayal of the young Vito
Corleone in The Godfather Part II (1974).

  • The actor went through gruelling training
for his role in Raging Bull due to the famous
‘method acting’ technique he employs. He
entered three Brooklyn boxing matches prior
to filming and won two. He went on to win a
Best Actor Oscar for this role.

  • He’s been married twice and has
a son, Raphael and an adopted
daughter with his first wife (Diahnne
Abbott). He has a further son,
Elliot, with his second wife, fl ight
    attendant Grace Hightower,
and twin sons, Julian Henry and
    Aaron Kendrick, from a longterm
