Pets welcome

In 2004, Pet Passports were launched in Britain and last year, more than 30,000 UK pets travelled abroad with their owners, leading
not only to a growth in places that welcome man’s (and woman’s!) best friends but in travel accessories for pets, too. Celebrity pooches,
such as Tinkerbell (owned by Paris Hilton, left), have set the trend: try the Four Seasons Hotel in Las Vegas (www.fourseasons.com) or the Hotel Danieli in Venice (www.fivestaralliance.com) – although remember to check pet size restrictions. And make sure you dress your pup appropriately.

A coat (www.petplanet.co.uk) will keep Rover stylish and warm, while Doggles sunglasses (inset) will protect Patch’s peepers (www.pret-a-pawter.co.uk). For low-maintenance mongrels there are still options: look for cottages in the Scottish Highlands or apartments in Moscow (www.holidaylettings. co.uk) and if you’re heading off to the ocean waves, keep your pet afloat with a buoyancy aid (www. petbuoyancyaids.co.uk). A Dog’s Life? Exactly.

“ I have seen some of the most magnificent scenery in the world and I have lived amongst tribes who
are interesting and little known. None of these places has moved me as did the deserts of Arabia.”

British explorer Sir Wilfred Thesiger (1910-2003) born in Addis Ababa, writing in Arabian Sands (published 1959)

Health in a bottle

A glass of wine with the added benefits of fruit juice? From Azerbaijan comes pomegranate wine (www.naturalpomegranatejuice.com),
which contains triple the antioxidants of regular red wine. Equally delicious is Laurent Perrier’s latest offering, the low-calorie Laurent Perrier Ultra Brut. With no added sugar, this is about as pure as champagne comes
(www.laurent-perrier.co.uk)

LIQUID GOLD

Ladies: Drink more beer! That’s the message from CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale; www.camra.org.uk), which is promoting ale
to women as a less alcoholic alternative to wine. CAMRA shows you where to find it, too: look for the new edition of its
Good Beer Guide (£10). Just don’t start complaining about the effects on the waistline.
