IF YOU LOVE films, then there’s only one place to be this spring: the 60th Cannes Film Festival, which runs from 16-27 May (www..festival-cannes.fr). This peaceful seaside town in southern France (only an hour from Nice) becomes the focus of the world’s lenses at this time, as starlets amble on the beach and star-filled yachts take over the coastline.
Competition and film promotion is fierce, as film-makers battle it out for the highly coveted award, the Palme d’Or (Golden Palm), which alludes to the famous palm-fringed Promenade de la Croisette that flanks Cannes’ celebrated beach.

The Hollywood Reporter recently described Cannes as the “granddaddy of all film festivals”, confirming its status among the film elite. Unlike other festivals, it attracts massive media exposure, quality movies, stars and distributors in equal parts.
It all began in 1939, when the French decided to start their own festival, in response to the German and Italian ones. The Second World War postponed its premiere, but in 1946 it was relaunched, and it soon grew into the glamorous event it is today. It’s attracted all the greats from Charlie Chaplin and Orson Welles to Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise.
Don’t miss one of the most exciting events of the year. bmi offers direct flights to Nice from various airports, starting on 3 May. Visit flybmi.com for more information.
