CULTURE AT QUEEN’S
WHEN MICHAEL EMMERSON, an undergraduate at Queen’s University in Belfast, set up a small event on campus some 40 years ago, he never expected it would flourish into Ireland’s largest cultural festival. Now in its 44th year, the Belfast Festival at Queen’s has hosted the Moscow State Ballet, the Royal Shakespeare Company, Michael Palin, Billy Connolly and Rowan Atkinson over the years. This year’s line-up includes music from top Argentinian tenor José Cura, France’s Gipsy Kings, and, fresh from Cuba, the Buena Vista Social Club. Elsewhere on the bill, writers Ian Rankin and Patrick McCabe give readings, while Ross Noble tickles the crowd with his offbeat comedy. 19 October-4 November; www.belfastfestival.com
DID YOU KNOW?
This October, join islanders on Jersey in making ‘black butter’, an island speciality made with cider, sugar, apples and liquorice, and eaten with scones, ice cream or as a pickle. Visitors can take part at the Elms, Jersey’s National Trust Headquarters, where anyone who spends 15 minutes helping will be paid with a glass of cider; or simply order a jar from La Mare Vineyards, the only commercial supplier (www..lamarevineyards. com). Yum yum.
