Music to your ears Glastonbury may be taking a break this year, but that’s no excuse to hang up your tent. T in the Park beat Glasto to the Best Festival award last year and with the likes of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Franz Ferdinand, Kaiser Chiefs and Arctic Monkeys taking the stage this year, the Scottish event’s reputation looks secure (8-9 July; www..tinthepark.com). For a more chilled festival experience, Womad brings the best world music, arts and dance to a field in Berkshire (28-30 July; www.womad.org). New festival on the block is Latitude in Suffolk, which promises more than just bands – although with Patti Smith, Snow Patrol and José Gonzalez on the bill, the bands alone are likely to prove a big enough draw (14-16 July; www.latitudefestival.com). Meanwhile, the Manchester Jazz Festival (22-30 July; www..manchesterjazz.com) and Paris Jazz Festival (until 30 July) help the summer go with a swing.

Mr Whippy’s days could be numbered if the latest invention from the US ever reaches our shores: ice cream from a vending machine. Moobella uses fresh ingredients and flash freezing techniques to produce a perfect scoop in just 45 seconds. The touch-screen technology allows you to choose from 12 flavours and blend in extra treats such as choc chips or cookies to create your very own mix on the spot. Following successful trials, Moobella machines will roll out in the US throughout 2006. www.moobella.com

HEAD-TURNER

What better way to celebrate Bastille Day (see p.10) then with jewels fit for a French Queen? Lalique jewellers have recreated the jewellery worn by Marie-Antoinette in the famous painting Marie-Antoinette of Hasbourg-Lorraine, Queen of France and her children. Made from crystal, the earrings and accompanying pendant can be bought in the shops of the Louvre museum, Paris, the Château de Versailles museum and all Lalique boutiques worldwide.
